My Glitzy Wizard of Oz Halloween Door scape 2012

I have been working on this door scape for months now! It took a lot of blood, sweat, tears and glitter but I'm so happy with how it came out!! My husband thinks it looks like clutter though... He just rolls his eyes at me and I continue on:) I guess that's our secret to a happy marriage! Ha!

Anyway this was truly a labor of love and I watched the movie at least 2-3 times while making this decor. Wizard of Oz is my all time favorite movie and I just needed an excuse to decorate with it! So while I was at Joann's last year I found a green witch on sale and it clicked! I thought to myself "Hey, Leighanne!! This is the perfect time of year to decorate with WOZ decor! I mean there is a witch in it!" Yes, I do talk to myself... So I bought a few items and had some big ideas on what I wanted to do! (Some of which I will do next year because there just wasn't enough time this year.) Earlier this year I found this group called Prettify your life and they gave me some inspiration to come up with this door scape! I drew up a sketch while watching the movie to make sure everything was in the right place. I had also done a search on Pinterest and online before I drew my sketch. I found very few ideas. Most of the ideas I found were for birthday parties which didn't help much. There is a lady on the PYL group named Cheryl that told me how to make some of the items from foam board which also makes it really cheap to do!! She taught me so much about it and I'm so grateful! This door wouldn't be possible without her and the rest of the PYLers! They were all full of ideas and support! I'm also very thankful to the jazzy woman who started the group, Angela! I have learned so much from her videos and from everyone else in the group!

Well back to my door/ decor! I made the majority of the decor myself using the foam board. I bought the white foam board from the dollar store and cut out the shapes I needed with an xacto knife. Then I peeled off the paper and painted them with craft paint. To make sure the paint stayed on and to protect it I sprayed the painted pieces with Krylon's clear glitter sealer. Then I glued pipe cleaners to the back and wired it on the garland. And TADA months later it was finished! Check out my pictures!

First, here's my mantle:)

Here's my door scape!

Next year toto will be darker:) Ran out of time trying to get his color right. He was white before a tea/ coffee soak and a rit black dye bath which turned him light grey... I got dark brown hair dye for free so I will be trying that at some point:)

I think the tornado is my favorite part!

The star is Glinda's wand

I printed the death certificate from somewhere online and I mod podged it onto the foam board.

Ok, maybe the haunted forest sign or even the hot air balloon are my favorites... Hard decision!

Here's the sign I made for the door bell.
The door bell is actually disconnected so this sign may stay up :)

Melted wicked witch. I actually got this idea from pinterest last year.
Probably the only idea I got from some where else. I did spray it with glitter though:)
Oh and I had the idea to add the crime scene tape:)

  1. Leighanne,
You did an awesome job on this! I want to thank you so much for the geat compliements you gave me in your post, and for actually trying my method. A lot of crafters wouldn't, so very happy it turned out for you! This is one of favorite movies as well, and you captured the story line perfectly!
Cudos for a job well done

  2. You did a great job! Here's a couple of links to recipes you could try to get Toto darker. it's probably close to what you used on him originally... one's a basic grungy recipe and the other is SUPER grungy lol :)
